Grant Williams’ Dallas Mavericks stint only lasted for 47 regular-season games because Luka Doncic reportedly played a role in his exit . However, Grant Williams recently revealed that it is far from the truth.
During his exclusive interview with The Athletic’s Shams Charania , the Charlotte Hornets forward detailed what happened during his infamous practice session with Luka Doncic and his role with the team before.
“When Fin (Michael Finley) told the story, I didn’t take it personally,” Grant Williams said. “I knew at the end of the day, it was a 32-6 run. It wasn’t 26-6, it was 32-6. But only six of those were on me, so I take credit for that.”
“My job is to challenge guys and to have them perform to the best of their abilities night in and night out,” he added.
Despite his short-lived tenure in Texas, Grant Williams has nothing but positive things to say about Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks, and he even called them “championship contenders” this season.
“Trust me, that team can be a championship contender,” Williams said. “I think it’s all about depending on the (playoff) matchup. That’s the only thing that would be concerning.”
Michael Finley dishes what happened between Grant Williams and Luka Doncic in practice
According to Michael Finley, the VP of Basketball Operations for the Dallas Mavericks, Grant Williams decided to go at Luka Doncic because he felt that the Slovenian floor general was not into it during practice.
“He decided he wanted to get under Luka’s skin. He felt that Luka didn’t come that day ready to practice. So to make a long story short, they had a scrimmage going and he’s talking trash to Luka up and down the court,” Finley detailed.
“So finally, Luka says, ‘Okay.’ And I’ll tell you, Luka went on a 26-6 run by himself. You can ask anybody, I’m not exaggerating. It was like a 26-6 run by himself. He showed everything, the threes, the post-up, the floaters, everything by himself,” he concluded.
After the infamous scuffle, Grant Williams eventually transferred to Charlotte, where he is one of the team’s veteran leaders, averaging 13.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game on 50.3 percent shooting from the floor in 29 games.
