Ex-NBA star sheds doubt on Ja Morant making another All-Star team

Ja Morant released a statement on Tuesday taking accountability for brandishing a gun for the second time in three months on social media — an apology that didn't exactly register as overly remorseful to a large chunk of fans on NBA Twitter.

On the same day, former NBA star Gilbert Arenas opted to chime in on the matter, sharing his opinion on the uphill battle that he perceives the Memphis Grizzlies star faces moving forward.

"Right now, he has a hard time coming back. The only way he makes an All-Star game is if you get voted in by the fans. Other than that you have to deal with those coaches voting you in," Arenas stated on the latest episode of Fubo Sports' No Chill with Gilbert Arenas.

It's undoubtedly been a tumultuous few months for Morant. Still, the idea that he struggles to garner enough votes to warrant another All-Star selection in the near future feels a bit farfetched.

Despite the recent turmoil, the South Carolina native remains one of the league’s brightest young stars, finishing this past season ranked within the top 10 of the NBA in both points per game (26.2) and assists per game (8.1). Damian Lillard was the only other point guard in the league to accomplish this feat.

Still, a sizeable suspension is almost certainly on the horizon for Morant, further adding to an array of question marks for the Grizzlies heading into the offseason. The team lacks a true scoring threat on the wing.

They are expected to part ways with Dillon Brooks and they appear destined to have a glaring hole at the point guard position to start the 2023-24 season. Not ideal for a team that was booted with ease in the first round of this year's playoffs by the Los Angeles Lakers.
