FIBA Europe Board cancels 2020 summer events due to coronavirus

With every major sporting event canceled for the foreseeable future, it was finally time for FIBA Europe to discuss canceling tournaments over the summer.

The FIBA Europe Board announced Wednesday that all 2020 summer tournaments have been canceled, and a decision on EuroBasket 2021 will be decided on Thursday, according to Eurohoops.net.

In a press release sent out by FIBA, a few prominent things were outlined for the future.

First, there will be the creation of a FIBA Post-COVID-19 Roadmap, which will prepare guidelines for how to get European basketball back on track.

Second, all youth championships have been canceled, and no promotions or relegations will occur. The small countries championships are also canceled, and club competitions will have season-ending tournaments at a later date.

Finally, FIBA will support all National Federations by paying the youth events' youth participation fee.

With the NBA season on pause, the 2020 Olympics postponed until 2021 and now FIBA canceling summer events, we may not see basketball until September or October.
