Former Sixth Man of the Year arrested on 40th birthday

Former UConn men's basketball star and longtime NBA guard Ben Gordon was arrested for the third time since October on Tuesday, the same day he turned 40 years old.

According to an Associated Press and ESPN report, Gordon is facing charges including carrying a dangerous weapon, second-degree threatening and interfering with an officer, stemming from an incident at a Connecticut juice shop. Stamford assistant police chief Richard Conklin gave an update on the situation on Thursday.

"Just before 10 a.m. Tuesday, several 911 callers reported 'a male acting aggressively and in a bizarre manner,'" Conklin said, per the report.

As officers "arrived and tried to take him into custody," Gordon "continued to act erratically," according to the report.

Per Conklin, the former No. 3 overall draft pick was eventually subdued by officers and arrested. Officers found "a folding knife clipped to Gordon's pocket and a stun gun and brass knuckles in his backpack," according to Conklin.

The assistant police chief said that Gordon was then transported to the police detention center and taken to a hospital for a "mental health evaluation," according to the report. The former NBA Sixth Man of the Year was released "late Tuesday" on $10,000 bond, per Conklin.

According to a TMZ Sports report, Gordon allegedly "threatened (the) juice shop employees" with the knife during the incident. Following the mental health evaluation, Gordon was "released back to cops," but officers said he continued to act "erratically."

"They claim a behavioral unit and some of Gordon's family and friends were ultimately able to calm him down — and he was then processed," the TMZ Sports report said.

The member of the 2003-04 All-Big East First Team spent the first five seasons of his professional career with the Chicago Bulls and was named First-Team All-Rookie for the 2004-05 campaign. Gordon played the final six seasons of his career with the Detroit Pistons, Charlotte then-Bobcats and Orlando Magic.

In October, the London native was charged with punching his son at New York's LaGuardia Airport, and in November, he was charged with a misdemeanor for allegedly punching a McDonald's security guard, according to the Associated Press and ESPN.

Per TMZ Sports, Gordon is due in court later in April for his latest arrest.
