Former Spur suspended four games

Josh Primo doesn't have an NBA team. The league still suspended him.

The San Antonio Spurs drafted Primo with the No. 12 pick in 2021, but released him before the season following reports he'd exposed himself to women multiple times. According to a lawsuit filed by former team psychologist Dr. Hillary Cauthen, Primo exposed himself nine times during his rookie season. The Spurs responded by waiving Primo, even though he had two years and $8.4 million remaining on his deal.

No team claimed Primo on waivers last season, but the NBA meted out discipline anyway. Their investigation concluded that Primo had indeed exposed himself multiple times, but that was his only misconduct.

Four games seems light, but it may be that the NBA has concluded that Primo already served a de facto year-long suspension already. That was part of their reasoning in giving Miles Bridges a 30-games suspension that was actually a 10-game suspension, after he sat out the entire 2022-23 season after horrific domestic violence charges.

No criminal charges were filed against Primo, though he and the Spurs settled the lawsuit from Dr. Cauthen last November. At the same time, the Spurs avoided any discipline from the league, despite Dr. Cauthen's allegations that they knew about Primo's actions long before they released him.

There's no sign that a team is willing to take a chance on the former lottery pick so far. Any team that does will have to deal with the four-game suspension, as well as the public stigma.

Once again, the NBA's approach to bad behavior against women remains unpredictable and inconsistent. It took them nearly a year, but at least they've finally done something regarding Primo, however ineffectual.
