Grizzlies center Steven Adams received a stem cell injection in his injured right knee and will be re-evaluated in four weeks, the team announced in a press release.
Given the timeframe, Adams has a good chance to miss the rest of the regular season — and perhaps beyond.
Adams had already been out after suffering a PCL sprain in the knee but had been considered day-to-day. That has changed to a close-to-worst-case scenario.
It’s been a difficult run for the Grizzlies since the All-Star break, beginning with star point guard Ja Morant, who has been away from the team after a video surfaced of Morant on social media. In the video, he was displaying a gun while in what was reportedly a strip club.
The Grizzlies announced that Morant, who has already been away from the team for three games, will remain away for at least three more.
Along with that, the Grizzlies lost forward Brandon Clarke for the season to an Achilles injury.
Adams, 29, is averaging 8.6 points and a career-high 11.5 rebounds, shooting 60 percent from the field, in 42 games.
Memphis (38-26) sat in a second-place tie with the Kings in the Western Conference entering Thursday’s game against the Warriors.
