Hawks hiring former player for front-office role

The Atlanta Hawks are signing a three-point specialist as part of their recent shake-up. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski , Atlanta (20-22) is finalizing a deal with former All-Star Kyle Korver to make him an assistant general manager.

The 41-year-old played four-and-a-half seasons in Atlanta, earning his lone All-Star selection in 2015. He returned to the organization as its director of player affairs and development in July after spending last season working for Brooklyn in a player-development role.

Korver's promotion is the latest move in Atlanta's front-office restructuring. Earlier this season, former president of basketball operations Travis Schlenk stepped down and moved to an advisory role with the team to focus on his family. Atlanta’s underwhelming 16-15 record at the time might’ve contributed to the role change.

GM Landry Fields has replaced Schlenk, continuing his rapid rise through Atlanta's front-office ranks. Fields was named Atlanta’s assistant GM in 2020 and promoted to GM this past offseason.

Wojnarowski reports that Korver will have a significant role under Fields and play a part in the Hawks' player-development strategies. With the trade deadline less than a month away, Korver will likely contribute to some of Atlanta’s ongoing trade discussions.

Despite his inexperience as a front-office executive, Korver is probably a decent talent evaluator after an impressive 17-year playing career.

The retired sharpshooter ranks fifth all-time in three-pointers made (2,450) and 10th in career three-point field goal percentage (42.9%). He’s the only player in NBA history to lead the league in three-point shooting percentage four times. During the 2009-10 season, Korver shot 53.6% from downtown, a single-season record.

The first task Korver will likely have as assistant GM will be aiding Fields in trade negotiations involving John Collins, who Atlanta is actively shopping.
