The Hawks have officially signed rookie second-round pick Tyrese Martin to a multi-year contract. After being selected with the No. 51 overall pick, Martin played in four Summer League contests for the Hawks. He averaged 12.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 24.2 minutes per game while shooting 47.5% from the field.
Martin put up a game-high 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the floor in Atlanta’s 95-88 win over Miami. The Hawks acquired his draft rights, along with cash considerations, from the Warriors in exchange for the draft rights to Ryan Rollins, who was the No. 44 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft.
Martin played his college ball at UConn, where he played two seasons after transferring from Rhode Island. During his final year, Martin averaged 13.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in 32.1 minutes per game while shooting 44.9% from the field, 43% from deep, and 68.9% from the line.
Over the course of his 114-game career with the Huskies, Martin notched 11.1 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in 30.8 minutes on .435/.346/.670 shooting. He led UConn to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament, the first time the program had done so since 2011-2012.
The Hawks haven’t had much success with their second-rounders over the years, but Martin could be the exception. He can attack the basket when called upon, but more importantly, he’s reliable as a spot-up shooter from 3-point range.
I wouldn’t expect Martin to garner many minutes in Atlanta, given the team’s top draft pick, AJ Griffin, plays a similar role. He’ll likely develop with the team’s G-Leauge affiliate, the College Park Skyhawks.
