Heat to use COVID-19 detection dogs when fans are allowed to attend games

The Miami Heat will have some of the strictest COVID-19 protocols when fans are allowed back into AmericanAirlines Arena next week. Surprisingly, dogs are included in their list of extensive protocols.

The Heat will use COVID-19 detection dogs to screen all guests entering the arena, according to 7 News Miami. The dogs "have been specifically trained to identify active virus," according to the Heat's website. If a dog detects the virus, the fan and their group won't be permitted into the game.

Fans attending games at AmericanAirlines Arena are also required to wear face masks. Spectators sitting within 30 feet of the court have to undergo an on-site rapid COVID-19 test to be allowed to enter.

"We're far from being in a place where you can pack an arena," Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra said. "To be able to start to invite people in and do it in the absolute safest way, I think it's a step in the right direction. Then, we just have to continue to do everything with great vigilance."

2,000 fans will be allowed to watch the Heat take on the Los Angeles Clippers next Thursday.

Other health and safety protocols include social distancing, contactless payment, enhanced cleaning measures and preventing anyone from eating inside the arena.
