The hype surrounding the summer premiere of “Space Jam: A New Legacy” is ramping up, and the latest development on the promotional front surrounding the LeBron James-starring movie arrived this week with a teasing of the dreaded villains that the Los Angeles Lakers superstar confronts in the movie.
The official Twitter account of the highly anticipated film has unveiled images of some members of the menacing “Goon Squad.” Interestingly enough and in a twist on the original “Space Jam” film, the “Goon Squad” crew is populated by animated versions of real-world basketball stars, including one of James’ current teammates.
Among the cast of cretins set to throw everything at James and his assembled Looney Tunes cohorts are Anthony Davis as “The Brow,” Klay Thompson as “Wet-Fire,” Nneka Ogwumike as “Arachnneka,” Damian Lillard as “Chronos,” and “Diana Taurasi as White Mamba.”
The release of movie posters featuring the “Goon Squad” this week follows a similar rollout of posters featuring James as well as some prominent Looney Tunes characters in March.
In December, James teased some compelling plot details of the upcoming film, including how it centers around the relationship between the Los Angeles Lakers star and his son.
What’s more, James also stressed how “Space Jam: A New Legacy” is not a sequel to the Michael Jordan-starring original.
Then in March, James provided a sneak peek of the movie by sharing some stills from the film. More interestingly, however, James opened up about his apprehension over going forward with a “Space Jam” reboot in the first place.
James has even taken the work of promoting the film himself amid the 2020-21 NBA season by wearing a “Space Jam” shirt while boarding a Lakers’ team flight last month.
The LeBron-led “Space Jam” project was in the works for years before filming actually began in 2019, and to no surprise it generated no shortage of anticipation from fans as well as skepticism from naysayers as the project got underway.
“Space Jam: A New Legacy” will simultaneously premiere in theaters and be streamable on HBO Max on July 16, 2021.
