Isaiah Thomas did not have a big role for the Phoenix Suns this year, but he had an interesting takeaway after the team’s disappointing exit from the NBA Playoffs by being swept by the Minnesota Timberwolves, saying that despite having the trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, the team did not have a point guard to properly distribute the ball to them.
“I think we just tried something that really hasn’t been done before with not having a point guard, and I think it just paid a toll on us in a series where we played against a young energetic physical team, that kind of knew, okay we’re going to pressure these guys the whole game to see if they can last,” Isaiah Thomas said on All The Smoke. “Like, to see if guys can really be able to make point guard plays. And not necessarily saying just because I’m on the team that we need to play a point guard, even before I got on the squad, from afar, looking at the Phoenix Suns I always felt like, when it came to the playoffs that kind of would be a missing piece. Ultimately you just can’t play without a point guard.”
It was a massively disappointing exit for the Suns, who brought in Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal to play with homegrown star Devin Booker, hoping to win a title. It has not worked to this point, and moves will need to be made to form a roster that is capable of contending for a championship. It will be an interesting offseason for the Suns to see what adjustments they make.
What will the Suns do with their Big 3?
There is a lot of speculation regarding what the Suns will do with their three star players this offseason, and if they will trade one of them away to strengthen the rest of the roster, but Thomas believes the organization will try to build around the trio.
“I don’t think they are going to trade any of them,” Thomas said on all The Smoke. “When it went well, when those guys really played well, you’ve seen what it could look like on a consistent basis, it was just inconsistent at times. Those guys really rock with each other, so you just gotta figure out who you can put around those guys to compliment their personalities, to compliment their game, to make things a lot easier for those three guys.”
The Timberwolves going on to dominate the Denver Nuggets on the road in games one and two might put the Suns’ loss in a bit of a better light, but it is still a massive disappointment. The Suns need to make the right offseason moves this summer.
