Jazz coach Quin Snyder stepping down after eight seasons

Utah Jazz head coach Quin Snyder plans to step down from the position after he "simply decided that it's time to step away," according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The Jazz have confirmed the report.

Snyder, 55, became the Jazz head coach in 2014 after previous stints as an assistant with the Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Lakers and Atlanta Hawks. He was also the head coach of the Missouri Tigers from 1999 until 2006.

After missing the playoffs in the first two years of his tenure, the Jazz have made the postseason six consecutive seasons under Snyder, but have failed to advance past the Western Conference semifinals. During the 2020-21 season, the Jazz finished with a 52-20 record and the top seed in the Western Conference, but blew a 2-0 series lead against the Clippers by losing four straight.

This season, Utah started the year 28-10. They lost 11 out of 13 games during a stretch in January. The Jazz finished fifth in the Western Conference and lost in the first round of the NBA playoffs against the Dallas Mavericks.

After the season, Snyder and the Jazz struggled to reach an agreement on an extension that would bring him back for the 2022-23 season, despite a sizable offer reportedly put on the table. According to ESPN, "philosophical issues" were to blame for the impasse.
