Joe Mazzulla unimpressed by All-Star gig

Coaching the All-Star Game is an honor bestowed on the coach with the best record in each conference. Well, some people think it's an honor.

Mazzulla took over the Celtics unexpectedly after Boston suspended Ime Udoka shortly before the season. The 34-year-old hit the ground running, winning Coach of the Month in the Eastern Conference after the Celtics started the season 18-4. But apparently he doesn't care about leading Team Giannis to an All-Star victory.

Especially thanks to the new wrinkle where Mazzulla won't even know who's on his team until just before the game starts.

It's not like there's a lot of coaching in the All-Star Game, even in the more competitive 4th quarters we've had since the NBA started playing to a target score (the "Elam ending") in 2020. Mazzulla's main role comes in making sure no one plays too much or too little. And of course, to stand there and look pretty.

He also needs to make sure he doesn't hurt himself before the contest. Mazzulla missed two games after getting both of his eyes scratched playing pickup basketball at TD Garden in Boston. While coaching the All-Star Game doesn't require much, it does require the ability to see.

Perhaps the biggest question is whether Mazzulla will demonstrate his gymnastics prowess in the locker room.

Joe Mazzulla isn't impressed by All-Star Games, or Marcus Smart's tumbling ability. That coolness should serve him well leading a squad of superstars. And maybe he's come up with a new wrinkle for the All-Star skills competitions: A gymnastics floor routine.
