Kevin Durant will remain with Nets on four-year, $198 million extension

Kevin Durant and the Brooklyn Nets will have several additional opportunities to win at least one championship together.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski (h/t Tim Bontemps) reports that Durant plans to sign a four-year, $198 million maximum contract extension with the Nets sometime after he becomes eligible to do so Saturday. The two-time NBA Finals Most Valuable Player averaged 26.9 points, 7.1 rebounds and 5.6 assists but was limited to just 35 regular-season games in 2020-21 because of a lingering hamstring problem.

Per Wojnarowski, Durant is expected to decline his player option for 2022-23 and extend his agreement off the $42 million owed to him for the upcoming season.

Durant, 32, originally joined the Nets in the summer of 2019, but he missed the subsequent season while recovering from the torn Achilles tendon he suffered in that year's NBA Finals. He is currently representing Team USA in the Summer Olympics held in Tokyo.

Fellow superstar James Harden joined Durant and Kyrie Irving to form a new "big three" via a January blockbuster trade involving the Houston Rockets, but all three dealt with physical setbacks throughout the first half of 2021. As Alex Schiffer of The Athletic noted, the trio went from the midway point of February through May 14 without being on the court at the same time for a game.

Bontemps adds Irving and Harden are also eligible to sign extensions with the Nets this summer.
