Kings reportedly hiring Warriors assistant Mike Brown as next coach

The Sacramento Kings have reportedly decided on who will be their next head coach.

Former All-Star point guard-turned-head coach-turned-color commentator Mark Jackson had been widely reported as the frontrunner to land the gig in Sacramento last week, but he's also been rumored to be a contender for the vacancy with the Los Angeles Lakers. Bleacher Report's Jake Fischer reported last week that in addition to Jackson and Brown, the Kings were also talking with former Orlando Magic head coach Steve Clifford.

Brown will be taking over a franchise that hasn't made the playoffs since 2006, which represents the longest drought in the NBA. Luke Walton served at the helm in Sacramento for two consecutive 31-41 campaigns in 2019-20 and 2020-21, before being fired after a 6-11 start this season.

Alvin Gentry took over following Walton's departure and went 24-41 the rest of the way. Gentry was fired in April.

The new hire is in his sixth season on Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr's bench and will finish the team's playoff run before taking over his new club, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The Dubs are currently up 2-1 in their best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal series against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Prior to joining Golden State, Brown spent time as the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers, compiling a 347-216 regular season record and 47-36 mark in the playoffs. Brown was named the 2008-09 NBA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cavs to a 66-16 record.
