Klay Thompson has yet to receive a contract offer from the Warriors

Klay Thompson is an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2024. The five-time All-Star has bounced back from two serious injuries and has rediscovered his elite three-point shot. However, the Warriors appear to be in no rush to negotiate a contract extension.

In a recent report from The Atheltic's Anthony Slater, Golden State is yet to open contract discussions. A contract extension for Thompson is still expected to happen, although it may not be until after the upcoming season reaches a conclusion.

"No official offers or counteroffers have been made from either side, according to league sources," Slater reported. "No exact salary numbers have been floated. There isn't a rush from either side, and there isn't a deadline. It could theoretically be done in-season, though I'd expect serious discussions (and perhaps an agreement) to come before that."

Warriors fans shouldn't be concerned. Golden State's front office approached Draymond Green's expiring contract with a similar nonchalance. Green signed a four-year $100M extension during the early stages of this summer. Thompson's negotiations are likely to follow a similar path.

Mike Dunleavy and Joe Lacob have been judicious in how they approach contract negotiations. Thompson's next deal will, in part, be based on his upcoming performances. The veteran guard is still a knock-down shooter, but questions are starting to surface regarding his defensive ability. In his prime, Thompson was an exceptional perimeter defender.

Lacob has been vocal about his desire to retain Golden State's core players for the remainder of their career. However, the Warriors' owner has admitted the task will be "difficult."

Thompson is unlikely to want a fresh start as he enters his age-34 season in 2024. A deal is likely to happen, but the wait will certainly allow the rumor mill to churn in the coming months.
