Knicks had interest in Carmelo Anthony reunion last summer

Carmelo Anthony back to the New York Knicks? It almost happened last summer.

High-ranking members of the Knicks organization reportedly had interest in signing Anthony in free agency, according to SNY's Ian Begley.

However, the plan to sign Anthony would've only come to life if the Knicks were able to sign two of the NBA's biggest stars. When they didn't land anyone big in free agency, Begley says the idea of signing Anthony "lost significant momentum."

Anthony will hit free agency again this summer, and the Knicks probably will express interest in the 35-year-old for the second straight year.

The Portland Trail Blazers forward was averaging 15.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists while shooting 42.6% from the field and 37.% from beyond the arc before the season was put on pause due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Anthony spent seven seasons with the Knicks before moving on the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2017, so a New York reunion wouldn't be completely out of the blue.

The Knicks are 21-45 and could use some significant upgrades at the forward position in 2021. RJ Barrett could actually learn a lot from Anthony, so maybe bringing him in could be a good thing.
