Kyrie Irving calls booing Celtics fans 'the scorned girlfriend hoping for a text back'
Kyrie Irving spent two seasons with the Boston Celtics before leaving in free agency to join the Brooklyn Nets in 2019. Nearly three years since his last game with the Celtics, fans in Boston still don't appreciate Irving's swift departure.
During the Celtics' 126-120 win against the Nets on Sunday, the crowd loudly booed Irving throughout the game and chants of "Kyrie sucks!" could be heard on the broadcast in the final minute.
After the game, Irving was asked during a press conference if the crowd's reaction bothered him.
"I know it's going to be like that for the rest of my career coming in here," Irving told reporters. "It's like the scorned girlfriend who wants an explanation on why I left but still hoping for a text back. I'm just like, 'It's fun while it lasted.' I think that's the relationship that makes it fun.
"The reality is that I am just grateful for my time in Boston."
Irving finished the game with 19 points, six assists, and four rebounds. That wasn't nearly enough to keep up with the Celtics' Jayson Tatum, who dropped a season-high 54 points in the win.
