Lakers HC has two bold predictions for breakout SG

Los Angeles Lakers head coach Darvin Ham recently offered two bold predictions for shooting guard Austin Reaves.

During an interview with Marc Stein and Chris Haynes on the "#thisleague UNCUT" podcast, Ham said that Reaves will be an All-Star "at some point soon" and he will win an NBA title, both with the 49-year-old as his coach.

The 25-year-old is entering his third season this fall and took a drastic leap in production from his first to the second campaign.

After averaging 7.3 points and 1.8 assists over 23.2 minutes per game as a rookie, Reaves nearly doubled his numbers in both categories. He played in 64 of the team's 82 regular season contests during the 2022-23 season (making 22 starts) and finished with 13.0 points, 3.4 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 28.8 minutes per game, improving in all areas of his shooting too.

Reaves recorded a .529/.398/.864 shooting line and played a crucial role in getting the Lakers back to the playoffs. The University of Oklahoma product was even better in the postseason, posting 16.9 points, 4.6 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game as Los Angeles made it to the Western Conference Finals. Reaves was particularly effective in the conference finals loss to the Denver Nuggets, finishing third behind Anthony Davis and LeBron James in scoring (21.3 points per game), while averaging the second-most assists (5.3) and leading the squad in three-pointers made (14).

If Reaves continues to improve, an All-Star nod could be in his future, but with the likes of Anthony Edwards, Damian Lillard (for now), De'Aaron Fox, Luka Doncic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Stephen Curry still residing in the west, he may have to wait a few more years.

As far as Ham and Reaves teaming up for an NBA championship, the path now officially runs through Denver, and with Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic back for more this season, the Nuggets should have a good shot at making it back to the finals.
