The Lakers have officially signed Sterling Brown to a 10-day contract, the team announced in a press release.

Brown, 27, is 6-foot-5 and becomes the first 10-day contract signing of the season. Teams became eligible to offer those contracts on Thursday.

appeared in 49 games with the Mavericks last season, averaging 3.3 points and 3.0 rebounds, shooting 38 percent from the field. He was waived by the Thunder in October.

The younger brother of former NBA guard Shannon Brown, Sterling Brown has also spent time with the Bucks and Rockets. He most recently had been playing for Raptors 905, Toronto’s affiliate in the G League.

The Lakers are seeking additional outside shooting and they have decided to go the free agent route — for now — in their hopes to find it.

”Positionally, the Lakers’ biggest need is greater depth at both forward spots, as they sorely need productive two-way players with depth who are taller than 6-foot-6 and can hit 3-pointers at a high rate of accuracy,” wrote Zach Stevens of Lakers Daily.

In related news, they are guaranteeing the contracts for guard Austin Reaves and power forward Wenyen Gabriel, as we relayed here.

Along with that, they have worked out free agent center DeMarcus Cousins (full post) and shooting guard Tyler Dorsey (full post).

Per the Lakers’ release:

Most recently, the 27-year-old appeared in four games (all starts) for the Raptors 905 of the NBA G League this season, averaging 11.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocks in 32.2 minutes per game, while shooting 38.1 percent from 3-point range.

The five-year NBA veteran was selected 46th overall in the second round of the 2017 NBA Draft after a four-year collegiate career at SMU (2013-17).
