Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Lakers want to keep Anthony Davis long term, but is he worth it?

After a dominant — and mostly healthy — 2022-23 season, Anthony Davis has re-entered the conversation as one of the NBA's best big men. That means "The Brow" could be in line for a big payday.

Per Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times, the Lakers are said to have "strong interest" in offering the 30-year-old star a deal worth $170 million over three seasons.

Davis' current contract with Los Angeles runs through 2024-25. Therefore, if this deal comes to fruition, it probably wouldn't kick in until the 2025-26 season.

This massive extension would average about $56.6 million annually. However, expect it to be heavily back-loaded, meaning that at age 34, Davis could easily be earning upward of $60 million.

Would the investment be worth it? According to this report, controlling owner and president Jeanie Buss and the Lakers think so.

By his standards, Davis had a relatively healthy 2022-23 season, playing in 56 regular-season games. He has played in 60 or more games only once since joining the Lakers in 2019.

With 38-year-old LeBron James' top prime self in the rearview mirror, the Lakers undoubtedly expect Davis will ascend to the No. 1 guy on a championship-caliber team. That the team is OK with such a lucrative investment also suggests it expects Davis to continue his stellar play well into his 30s.

In the playoffs last season, Davis was consistently the best defender, almost effortlessly controlling the glass. He led all players in the postseason in rebounding (14.1 per game) and blocks (3.1 per game).

The biggest question is whether Davis' body will withstand the test of time. Not everyone can age like "The King," so a huge investment in "The Brow" seems like it could become problematic.
