Los Angeles Lakers guard Alex Caruso was arrested this past Tuesday for two misdemeanor charges involving possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

The Lakers fan favorite apparently tried to board a flight at Easterwood Airport in College Station, Texas, with an a herb grinder that contained marijuana. He was subsequently apprehended by Texas A&M police.

Given Caruso’s rapidly developing cult status among NBA fans, news of his arrest spread like wildfire online.

Eventually, it even got to his teammate – LeBron James.

In response to Caruso’s arrest, James tweeted out this message.

This incident is unlikely to impact Caruso’s status as one of the league’s more intriguing free agents to watch.

Since signing with L.A. four years ago, Caruso played an instrumental role off the bench. His defensive tenacity, in particular, has meshed well with the Lakers’ identity over the past couple of seasons.

In 2020-21 Caruso averaged 6.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists.

Recently Caruso got extremely honest about his Lakers future – and it remains to be seen whether this week’s happenings will ultimately alter those plans at all.

This is going to be a big offseason for the Lakers. Between a looming potential Russell Westbrook trade, Kyle Kuzma’s imminent departure and Caruso’s questionable status, last year’s champs may look very different come the 2021-22 season.
