LeBron, Pistons' Stewart both receive suspensions for altercation

An altercation that left Detroit Pistons center Isaiah Stewart bloodied and in need of stitches has resulted in suspensions for both Stewart and Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James.

James, 36, received a one-game suspension -- the first of his 19-season NBA career -- while Stewart was assessed a two-game suspension, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The incident occurred while James and Stewart were jostling for rebounding position after a free throw. James left arm struck Stewart in the face, causing a cut that required five stitches to close.

Stewart, 20, was incensed by the hit and attempted to push through coaches, officials, and teammates to get to James. Both players were ejected from the game.

"Everyone in the league knows LeBron's not a dirty guy," Lakers center Anthony Davis said after the game, via ESPN. "In fact, when he knew he hit him, as soon as he did it, he looked back at him like, 'Oh, my bad. I didn't try to do it.'"

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, James attempted to get the phone number of Stewart after the game so he could apologize.

The 9-9 Lakers will be without James for a Tuesday road game against the New York Knicks. The 4-12 Pistons have games against the Miami Heat and Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday and Wednesday.
