Luka Doncic trading card sets record for basketball card at auction

A rare Luka Doncic trading card set a new record for basketball cards at auction, selling for $3.12 million at PWCC Marketplace on Thursday. 

The card is the 2018 National Treasures Rookie NBA Logoman Patch Auto 1-of-1 card.

“This is the highest price ever realized for a basketball card sold in a verified public auction,” said PWCC Marketplace vice president Jesse Craig in a statement released by the auction house.  

“When this card went to the block we purposefully avoided speculation on a price because this was an important moment for the market to decide on the value of Luka’s best trading card. The card stood on its own merits and the market placed it where it belongs. If you include private sales, Luka now sits between the high sales for LeBron and Jordan. The market confirmed Luka is in rare air in terms of collectability with this sale.”

It is important to note that the record price here only includes auction sales and not private sales. 

This very Doncic card reportedly sold privately for $4.6 million in 2021. 

According to PWCC, this is not only the highest price ever paid for a basketball card at a public auction, but the seventh-most expensive trading card in any sport to be sold at a public auction. The top of that list features Honus Wagner and Mickey Mantle baseball cards. 

What makes the Doncic card so valuable is that it is not only autographed by the superstar, but it also contains a patch from his jersey from his rookie season and it is the only card of its kind in existence. There is no other duplicate anywhere. This is it.
