Mavericks star ejected in Slovenia's World Cup loss

Luka Doncic complains a lot. The FIBA referees weren't having it Wednesday.

Slovenia's Doncic and Canada's Dillon Brooks were both ejected from Canada's 100-89 win over Slovenia in the quarterfinals of the FIBA World Cup in Manila. Doncic got tossed for arguing an uncalled foul, his second technical of the game, and finished with 26 points, four rebounds and five assists.

The ejection of Brooks should surprise no one, but this call was pretty weak. The referees threw out Brooks for taunting, but his reaction to his made three-pointer wouldn't have drawn a technical or even a second glance in an NBA game, much less lead to an ejection.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the way for Team Canada once again, scoring 31 points and grabbing ten rebounds. And he did it while taking only 12 field goal attempts, the second time in the World Cup he's had 30 points on 12 or fewer shots. For the tournament, the 25-year-old Oklahoma City Thunder guard is averaging 25 points, seven rebounds, five assists and 1.7 steals per game.

Wednesday, he got backup from New York Knicks forward R.J. Barrett, who scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds of his own.

Two days after Canada qualified for the Olympics for the first time in 24 years, they advanced to face Serbia in the semi-finals. While Serbia doesn't have Finals MVP Nikola Jokic, they've still gone 5-1 and outscored their opponents by 28 points per game.

But Canada is a serious contender to win the World Cup. Especially if every time Brooks gets tossed, the other team's superstar does too.
