July 6 in Dallas County will be now known as “Luka Doncic Day” to show appreciation for how the Dallas Mavericks star has gone above and beyond in his local charitable efforts this past year.

County Judge Clay Jenkins made the honor official by passing a measure approved by the Dallas County Commissioners Court to recognize Doncic for his on- and off-court contributions to the region, according to an ESPN report. The commissioners consider Doncic “an ambassador to the game of basketball.”

The honor is largely inspired by how Doncic, along with other Mavericks players, donated $500,000 to help defer childcare costs incurred by healthcare and other frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What’s more, Doncic and Mavericks team owner Mark Cuban also donated $1.25 million to help recovery efforts from the snowstorm that crippled the region and caused widespread utility outages in February.

Doncic is currently preparing to lead his Slovenian national team into the Tokyo Games, but he took to Twitter to acknowledge the recognition and honor.

Cuban similarly posted a message on social media to celebrate Doncic.

Doncic is coming off yet another outstanding season in what has been a remarkable start to his NBA career. The dynamic superstar averaged 25.7 points, 8.0 rebounds and 8.6 assists across 66 games. The superb season led to Doncic’s second All-Star nod, and more impressively, his second consecutive appearance on the All-NBA First Team.

Now, Doncic will turn his attention to the Olympics. The first-time Slovenian Olympics squad will face Argentina on July 26, Japan on July 29 and Spain on Aug. 1 in the round-robin group stage.
