NBA commissioner Adam Silver addresses Kyrie Irving's latest controversy

NBA commissioner Adam Silver issued a statement Thursday morning regarding Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving's latest controversy surrounding his recent antisemitic posting on social media.

Irving shared an Amazon link on social media last week for a movie called "Heroes to Negroes: Wake Up Black America," a film that contains many antisemitic tropes and falsehoods about Jewish people, including the existence of "Jewish slave ships" and a claim that "many famous high-ranking Jews" worship Satan. The film also contains a fake quote from "Adolph" Hitler.

Plenty used to off-the-court controversy, Irving has faced a firestorm in recent days for his decision to post the link. Thursday's statement from Silver -- who is Jewish -- was his first on the matter.

Among the recent big-name critics of Irving's post were Hall of Famers Charles Barkley and Shaquille O'Neal. Barkley said he thought that Irving should be suspended and was an "idiot," while Shaq was critical as well.

The Nets and the seven-time All-Star point guard both donated $500,000 to anti-hate causes on Wednesday, to go along with Irving's statement. This came after Irving's father and stepmother reportedly met with the Anti-Defamation League.
