Nets-Raptors trade sends guard packing for fourth consecutive year

Spencer Dinwiddie is on the move yet again.

If the reported deal is finalized, this will be the fifth time that the guard has been traded in his 10-season career, all of which have come since 2016. This will also be the fourth consecutive year that Dinwiddie has been moved, including at or near the third straight trade deadline.

He was traded from the Detroit Pistons to the Chicago Bulls in June 2016 and from the Brooklyn Nets to the Washington Wizards in August 2021 in a sign-and-trade deal as part of a five-team blockbuster that also included former MVP guard Russell Westbrook (and many others).

Dinwiddie was then sent to the Dallas Mavericks in February 2022 on the day of the trade deadline and shipped back to the Nets three days before the 2023 deadline last February in a transaction that paired star guard Kyrie Irving with stud point guard Luka Doncic in Dallas.

According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, Dinwiddie didn't request a trade out of Brooklyn this winter, but "it certainly sounded like Dinwiddie's exit from the Nets was welcomed by both sides."

Both Dinwiddie and Dennis Schroder are 30-year-old guards with the former on an expiring $20.4M contract and the latter still having two years' worth $12.4 and $13M left on his deal. The duo have put up similar numbers this season.

Power forward Thaddeus Young is likely on the final leg of his playing career, averaging 5.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists across 23 games (six starts) with the Toronto Raptors this season. Young spent 101 regular season games (plus six playoff contests) with the Nets during the 2014-15 and 2015-16 campaigns.
