New Wizards boss continues roster teardown

Michael Winger took over the Wizards less than a month ago. He already cut loose his Bradley Beal, and he's set to trade his other highly paid former All-Star.

Porzingis has a $36 million player option for next year, while Marcus Morris is owed $17 million on the last year of his contract. The Bradley Beal trade removed more than $200 million in future salary from Washington's books, though the Wiz will have to take back additional salaries — likely Danilo Gallinari's expiring deal — to make the Porzingis trade work.

There's also unspecified draft pick compensation likely going to the Wizards, but Winger's plan seems clear. He wants to give Washington a clean slate. Winger doesn't have any obligation to players acquired under the old regime, which means even recent first-round picks like Johnny Davis and Corey Kispert shouldn't feel any sense of security in D.C.

For a team with one playoff win in the past five years, why should the new boss be obligated to keep any of the incumbents? The Beal-Porzingis-Kyle Kuzma core won 35 games last year and finished 12th in the East. In 2021-22, it was the same record and the same finish.

Kuzma has to be considering his free-agent options when he sees the moves his team is making. It doesn't look like the Wizards are particularly interested in any long-term contracts or any of their existing players, and it looks like Kuzma will have to find a new deal elsewhere.
