It remains to be seen whether Chicago Bulls guard Coby White will bring home the coveted Most Improved Player award. Although it’s likely that the former Tar Heel won’t, no thanks to the equally impressive performances of the Philadelphia 76ers Tyrese Maxey and the Houston Rockets’ Alperen Sengun this season, White has gained the utmost respect of his teammates, especially former All-Star Nikola Vucevic.
Bounced back in a huge way
White began showing signs of his improved play last season, showcasing a tighter handle, solid defense, and better decision-making. However, even then, he still didn’t have that big a role in Chicago, primarily operating as an off-the-bench scorer for a team that revolved around its “Big 3” of Vucevic, DeMar DeRozan, and Zach LaVine.
However, this season, the North Carolina native has been thrust into the starting five and handed the keys to the offense. And he is not disappointed. White is averaging career highs in points (19.7), assists (5.3), and rebounds (4.8) per game while shooting an impressive 39% from beyond the arc. But it’s not just his individual stats that are turning heads; it’s his impact on the team as a whole.
“It’s been great, honestly,” Vucevic said about White's performance this season.
“Last year was a little so-so for him, but he came back this year and has been playing great for us. Respect guys like that.”
Finally figured it out
Although it may have taken five seasons for White to make that all-important leap, it’s clear that he has found his footing in the NBA and is now a crucial piece of the Chicago Bulls’ puzzle.
In fact, White has become one of the most reliable players on the team, consistently delivering strong performances and stepping up in clutch moments. Vucevic has found this most impressive, as he reckons not everyone has the ability to maximize their potential in such a short span of time.
“You see so many young guys come into the league and they never figure it out. As I get older and knowing what I’ve been through to get where I am, you appreciate when young guys take advantage of the opportunity and play well,” Vooch added.
