Pelicans guard CJ McCollum joining ESPN as analyst

New Orleans Pelicans guard and NBA Players Association president CJ McCollum is joining ESPN as an NBA analyst, the Associated Press reported on Monday.

According to the report, the network signed McCollum to a "multi-platform deal." He will make his debut on Thursday for ESPN2's coverage of the NBA Finals.

"I am excited to bring what I feel is my unique perspective, based on my vast knowledge of the game that I’ve gained during my nine years as a player in the NBA," McCollum, who earned a journalism degree in college, said in a statement to the AP. "To have an opportunity to put my journalism background to use on the largest stage with the many talented professionals at ESPN is a dream come true."

McCollum will also work as an analyst for the NBA Summer League games as well as help develop a new podcast for the network.

"CJ is one of the most respected players in the NBA, which is evident by his role as President of the NBA PA. Furthermore, he’s an extremely talented member of — and leader on — one of the most interesting teams in the league: the New Orleans Pelicans," ESPN head of NBA and studio production David Roberts said. "CJ’s commitment to this opportunity, combined with his passion for journalism and sports broadcasting, will be a clear benefit for NBA fans."

McCollum is the most recent NBA star to take on a media role while still playing basketball full-time. Three-time NBA champion Draymond Green signed a multi-year deal with Turner Sports back in January, which has included guest appearances for TNT while he continues playing for the NBA Finals-bound Golden State Warriors.
