Philadelphia 76ers are signing Ryan Broekhoff

The Philadelphia 76ers are signing Ryan Broekhoff for the upcoming resumption of the NBA season.

The signing, which was reported by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, is meant to bring some much-needed shooting to Philadelphia's roster. In his two seasons with the Dallas Mavericks, Broekhoff has a .403 3-point field goal percentage on 2.4 attempts per game.

Broekhoff was waived by the Mavericks in February so the team could sign Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who had been waived by the Charlotte Hornets. Before signing with the Mavericks, the 29-year-old spent several seasons playing in Turkey and Russia. The Melbourne native is expected to be a part of the Australian National Team at the 2021 Olympics alongside Ben Simmons.

The 76ers are currently tied with the Indiana Pacers for the fifth-best record in the Eastern Conference. They are led by Simmons and Joel Embiid, both talented players who struggle with shooting. The 76ers already have 15 players on their roster, so to add Broekhoff, the team would need to release one of the players currently contracted. It is also possible that one of the players may be opting out of the resumed season and Broekhoff would be able to be added to the roster.

"The 76ers currently have 15 players on standard contracts and one on a two-way deal, so it’s not yet clear how they’ll bring Broekhoff aboard," wrote Luke Adams of HoopsRumors. "Philadelphia could waive a player on the 15-man roster to make room, or could sign Broekhoff as a substitute in the event that someone voluntarily opts out."

The NBA season is slated to resume on July 30, with 22 of 30 teams heading to Orlando to finish out the season, which was paused in March due to the coronavirus.
