Pistons' Cade Cunningham shares absurd take on historic losing streak

Nothing has gone right for the Detroit Pistons this season, to say the least, as the franchise is mired in a historic 28-game losing streak. However, according to young star Cade Cunningham, the team is on the cusp of greatness if only they'd catch a few breaks.

Following the Pistons' most recent loss, falling 128-122 in overtime to the Eastern Conference-leading Boston Celtics, Cunningham shared an absurd take on how the team compares to the rest of the NBA.

"I think it shows like we're on the same level as all these teams we're playing against," Cunningham told Tom Bontemps of ESPN. "There's no team that I've ever come across in the NBA where I felt like I was going into a slaughterhouse."

Some might say Cunningham's bold comments show a severe lack of awareness, especially considering the circumstances. Good, even average teams don't lose 28 straight games, and no matter how you slice it, the Pistons look miles away from relevancy and even further from actually contending.

Since beginning the 2023-24 campaign 2-1, the Pistons have lost 12 of 28 games by double-digits and only once by a basket or less. Furthermore, Detroit has dropped six games by at least 20 points during the team's dubious streak, three of which came by 32 or more.

For Cunningham's part, he's done all he can to turn things around for the Pistons. Through 31 games, the third-year guard is averaging career-highs in points (23.3), assists (7.1) and field goal percentage (.449).

Teams will do almost anything to rally the troops during an extended losing streak, and there's nothing wrong with staying positive or believing in your squad. However, Cunningham's foolish declaration isn't likely to help matters and certainly won't garner them much sympathy from opponents, who are no doubt licking their chops to play them.
