Pistons rookie Killian Hayes out at least eight more weeks with hip injury

The Detroit Pistons announced earlier this month that rookie guard Killian Hayes would be out indefinitely due to the torn labrum in his right hip that he suffered in a 125-115 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Jan. 4.

The 19-year-old is no closer to returning to action in the second half of the month.

As noted by Rod Beard of The Detroit News, the Pistons confirmed on Wednesday that Hayes will not have surgery to repair the problem and will undergo further evaluations of the injury after eight weeks of rest and rehabilitation. Beard added that Pistons head physician Dr. Bill Moutzouros consulted with two specialists and determined that the seventh overall selection of the 2020 draft did not require what would have been a season-ending operation.

The hope is that Hayes can participate in at least a few games before Detroit's campaign ends. As of the start of Wednesday's contests, the Pistons possessed a 3-10 record and little chance of playing in the postseason.

Hayes started in all seven of his only NBA games, to date, and averaged 4.6 points, 3.6 assists, 1.1 rebounds, and 2.4 turnovers while shooting 27.7% from the field and 25% from three-point range.
