Raptors take strong stance on Scottie Barnes' future

Scottie Barnes will not be included in any trade for Damian Lillard. According to a post on X by Kurt Helin of NBC Sports, the Toronto Raptors have no desire to part with their 22-year-old star of the future.

The Raptors previously refused to include Barnes in negotiations for Kevin Durant before he joined the Phoenix Suns.

"Let me just say what I have heard Barnes is not available," Helin posted. "Portland fans love the idea of landing him but I've been told by multiple people it's not that he was taken off the table, he was never in the same room as the table."

Barnes has flashed All-Star potential since being drafted in 2021. The Florida State product can play both forward positions and has the physical frame to become an elite defender. Barnes would be the ideal return for the Portland Trail Blazers. Yet, the Raptors are playing it smart.

Masai Ujiri knows Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby have a high trade value around the NBA. As such, a package built around either forward would allow the Raptors to keep hold of Barnes. Toronto has more to offer than Miami and can offer young project players such as Gradey Dick to help sweeten the deal, thus making them favorites to win the Damian Lillard sweepstakes.

Of course, Lillard has been vocal about his desire to play in Miami. If the star guard stands strong, he will make it difficult for Toronto to rationalize making a move for him. However, Lillard doesn't hold much high ground in this scenario. After handing in a trade request, the veteran guard gave up most of his leverage. Now, the Trail Blazers will search out the best return possible.

Unfortunately for Portland, the best return is Barnes, and that's unlikely to happen. Still, Anunoby is a logical second choice, especially when paired with other young talents and draft picks. After months of rumors, it finally feels like a Lillard trade is imminent. Where he goes remains to be anybody's guess.
