Reigning MVP Joel Embiid addresses James Harden's trade request from Sixers
While James Harden's recent trade request could spell the end of his tenure with the Philadelphia 76ers, star center Joel Embiid isn't taking the decision personally.
In an interview with Showtime's Rachel Nichols, Embiid spoke honestly about the situation but expressed optimism that Harden and the team could resolve their differences.
“Disappointed," Embiid admitted. "But then again, I also understand it's business. People make decisions and I'm more appreciative of the way he's handled the whole situation ... [I] want him to come back, obviously, so we can go out and accomplish what we want, which is to win a championship. So hopefully, his mindset can be changed. But other than that, I'm just so happy to be his friend."
The 33-year-old Harden was acquired from Brooklyn at the 2022 trade deadline, and since his arrival, he and Embiid have enjoyed plenty of individual success on the court. Last season, Harden averaged 21 points and an NBA-leading 10.7 assists, while Embiid captured his first MVP Award and second consecutive scoring title, posting 33.1 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.
However, as the 76ers have still failed to reach the ultimate goal of a championship — or even advance to the conference finals — questions remain as to how the franchise can get over the hump. Even though Harden wants out, moving on from the future Hall of Famer might not be the best course of action, and it appears Philadelphia is in agreement.
ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported on July 4 that the Sixers "would still love to keep” Harden in Philadelphia, and his relationship with team president Daryl Morey could influence the decision.
As Embiid mentioned, he and Harden still have a strong relationship, and since the trade request, the two have been spending a considerable amount of time with each other. They were first together at Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin's annual Hamptons white party and again at the Fanatics and NBPA's Summer Players Party held at TAO Nightclub in Las Vegas.
If Harden values his relationships with Morey and Embiid as much as they do, it might be possible to convince "The Beard" to return to Philadelphia. Harden is under contract for one season, and the Sixers would be on the hook for $35.6M. Should Harden decide to rescind his request, perhaps the sides will attempt to hammer out the multi-year deal that he desires.
Even so, the Sixers have been conducting their due diligence on the trade market. According to NBC Sports Chicago's K.C. Johnson, Philadelphia is among the teams that have held "preliminary conversations" with the Bulls regarding a potential deal for two-time All-Star Zach LaVine.
Although LaVine is someone Philadelphia could build around for the next several seasons, it might be in the team's best interest to keep Harden around at that point. It would allow promising guard Tyrese Maxey to continue playing in his same role and give the 76ers the opportunity to assess their future next offseason with greater financial flexibility.
There's no telling where Harden ends up, but it's clear Philadelphia would welcome him back with open arms. With plenty of time before the season begins, anything is possible.
