Report: Cavaliers may part ways with GM Koby Altman

Fans of the Cleveland Cavaliers knew they'd be in for a painful and long rebuild after superstar LeBron James took his talents away from Northeast Ohio for the second time of his Hall of Fame career in the summer of 2018.

That process may soon have new architects.

FortyEight Minutes founder Sam Amico reports that Cavaliers’ ownership is "evaluating whether to move ahead with the current front office" and that "the status of general manager Koby Altman appears to be very much up in the air."

This is hardly a surprise. The Cavs posted back-to-back 19-win seasons following James' departure and then went 22-50 during the 2020-21 campaign. This season, the Cavs traded of Kevin Porter Jr. to the Houston Rockets, benched of two-time All-Star Andre Drummond for over a month before the parties reached a buyout agreement and one-time champion forward Kevin Love continued to fall out of favor with fans and potentially some teammates. There also remain serious doubts the duo of Collin Sexton and Darius Garland can lead the Cavaliers to anything other than playoff contention and maybe a one-and-done postseason journey.

Amico adds the Cavs could keep Altman but have him serve under a to-be-hired president of basketball operations. Altman has held his current role since July 2017.
