Report: Concerns growing for NBA return amid coronavirus spike in Florida

Florida's recent spike in coronavirus cases is spreading unease throughout NBA executives, players and staff as the return-to-play plan at Walt Disney World looms, according to Zach Lowe and Baxter Holmes of ESPN.

The scribes report NBA commissioner Adam Silver reportedly addressed Florida's rise in cases during a recent phone call with team executives, and apparently he remains confident that the league's bubble environment will help keep players and staff safe amid the state's outbreak. However, Silver did address the severity of the situation, noting the dangers the virus could have on resuming the season in Florida.

Florida recorded over 4,000 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, which was a new single-day high for the state, and beat out Friday's number of 3,822 cases. As of Sunday morning, Florida has recorded over 93,000 total cases with 3,143 deaths, according to the New York Times.

However, the number of cases in Orlando, where the league would resume the season, aren't nearly as high as in other parts of the state. The Walt Disney World resort is primarily located in Orange County, which has reported over 4,500 total cases, while Miami-Dade County in South Florida is the state's hardest-hit region with over 25,000 total cases.

On top of the coronavirus, some of the NBA's biggest stars are considering not participating in the season resumption in order to bring more attention and awareness to racial injustice issues in the United States. So even if they do return to the court this summer, some of the best players may not be there.
