Report: Hawks targeting two-time All-Star as new Trae Young co-star

Trae Young appears safe in Atlanta. However, if the Hawks and their new front office ultimately proceed with a firesale this offseason, they'll need to find a new running mate for their star point guard.

One player who could potentially fill that void is Toronto Raptors forward Pascal Siakam, who Yahoo Sports' Jake Fischer reported is believed to be on Atlanta's radar as a potential trade target.

Siakam, 29, is coming off his second All-Star selection after averaging new career highs in points (24.2) and assists (5.8) during the 2022-23 season. He also led the NBA in minutes per game for the second consecutive year at 37.4 per contest.

Despite Siakam's brilliance, Fischer notes that the Raptors are said to be actively "deliberating various pathways" to proceed with their roster after missing the postseason for the second time in three seasons. Siakam is entering the final year of his $136.9M contract and will be eligible for a hefty extension this summer.

Things are destined to look different in Toronto next year following the firing of NBA championship-winning coach Nick Nurse after their loss to the Chicago Bulls in the Play-in tournament.

Beyond the change to the coaching staff, Siakam, OG Anunoby, Gary Trent Jr. and Fred VanVleet's future with the franchise appear to be in limbo. The latter elected to opt out of his $22.8 million player option earlier this week, meaning VanVleet will hit the open market on June 30 as an unrestricted free agent.

Siakam would add some much-welcomed offensive pop to Atlanta's frontcourt. Current Hawks starters John Collins and Clint Capela continue to have their names dangled in trade talks. Collins is coming off his worst statistical season since his 2017-18 rookie campaign, highlighted by a career-worst 29.2% shooting percentage from deep. Capela is notoriously underwhelming on the offensive end but does present elite traits as a rebounder and rim-protector, averaging 11.0 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 2022-23.
