With rumblings that the relationship between the Golden State Warriors and general manager Bob Myers could come to an end after the season, it seems big market franchises like the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers could pursue the 47-year-old this summer.
After reaching the NBA Finals six times in the last nine years, the Golden State Warriors are the preeminent dynasty team in North American professional sports right now. Without a doubt, the roster’s big three of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green have played a major role in their success. As well as head coach Steve Kerr. However, Bob Myers does deserve a fair amount of flowers tossed his way.
The organization’s current GM drafted Thompson and Green, was key in landing superstar Kevin Durant and made key additions like Jordan Poole and Andrew Wiggins. Which has set the team up for another run of title contention in the next few seasons. However, that could all becoming to an end soon.
It was reported this week that Myers’ contract with the organization is set to expire in July, and he and the Warriors are at an impasse in negotiations. That opening reportedly has led to several teams that are now circling the star executive to help make their organizations the next dynasty franchise.
New York Knicks among four teams that could pursue Bob Myers this summer
On Wednesday, The Athletic went in-depth on the Golden State Warriors and Bob Myers situation. Unsurprisingly, the stalled contract talks come down to money. Myers wants to be paid like a top executive, which is understandable considering his success, and that would mean a notable raise in pay from where he currently resides. Which reportedly is in the “range of either sixth, seventh, or eighth on the base salary” scale among top executives.
The Warriors have a massive payroll and have blown by all tax thresholds to try and maintain their championship team. Top execs in the league reportedly make around $10 million per year and the organization could be balking at adding that sort of yearly amount to an already historically expensive team.
If the Warriors don’t come to their senses and re-sign Myers, The Athletic reports that “Washington, Phoenix, and New York are all worth monitoring as [possible suitors]. Meanwhile, the recent focus in front office circles, where Myers’ situation has become a hot topic, is on the Clippers.” The outlet speculates the Clippers would be a top contender due to the fact that team owner Steve Ballmer is the wealthiest man in the league and would be willing to pay Myers whatever he wanted.
The New York Knicks’ incumbent general manager is Scott Perry. However, he was hired in 2017 by a previous regime, and not the current one led by former powerhouse agent Leon Rose. Meaning, top decision-makers don’t have close ties to the former Sacramento Kings exec.
