According to NBA insider Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints , the Indiana Pacers, Dallas Mavericks and Cleveland Cavaliers were interested in acquiring Golden State Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins at this year’s trade deadline.
The Warriors were open to trading Wiggins, but no deal came to fruition.
“There has been interest from other teams in the former first overall pick dating back to the trade deadline, as the Indiana Pacers, Dallas Mavericks, and even the Cleveland Cavaliers all held interest, league sources said,” Siegel wrote. “The Cavs held a slight internal interest in Wiggins and discussed the possibility of pursuing him at the trade deadline, although no real pursuit was ever made by Cleveland at the trade deadline.”
The Warriors signed Wiggins to a four-year, $109 million extension in October 2022. Wiggins is making $24.3 million this season. The Kansas product will make $26.3 million in 2024-25.
Wiggins is averaging 12.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists this season while shooting 45.7% from the field, 36.0% from beyond the arc and 73.4% from the free-throw line. He was the first overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft.
Wiggins has career averages of 18.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Warriors. He won the 2014-15 Rookie of the Year Award with the Timberwolves and helped the Warriors win the 2022 championship against the Boston Celtics.
Wiggins only played in 37 games last season due to a family matter. The Warriors, just like last season, gave Wiggins all the time and space he required when he dealt with a family matter again this season.
The Warriors are in 10th place in the Western Conference standings. The front office could look to move Wiggins again in the summer unless the team goes on a magical championship run.
The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Warriors in the second round of the 2023 playoffs in six games. It was the first time the Dubs didn’t reach the NBA Finals after making the postseason in the Steve Kerr era, which began in 2014-15.
