Report: Rockets, John Wall working on trade ahead of 2021-22 season

John Wall and the Houston Rockets are headed for a divorce.

After meeting and seeing "eye-to-eye" on the direction of the Rockets, Wall and the franchise agreed to work together to find a new home for the veteran point guard, according to The Athletic's Shams Charania

The plan is for Wall to remain present around the team entering training camp. However, he will not play in games for Houston this season, Charania adds.

"In a meeting between Wall and the Rockets recently, Houston officials explained to Wall the direction of the franchise and that the team wants to protect the veteran guard's health," Charania writes. "The Rockets explained that the team does not want to jeopardize Wall's fitness, and the sides agreed on the route that won't complicate his ability to continue playing at a high level."

There are no buyout plans on the two years and $91.7 million remaining on Wall's contract, per Charania.

Wall, who is entering his 12th NBA season, averaged 20.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 6.9 assists per game for the Rockets last season while shooting 40.4% from the field and 31.7% from deep. He appeared in 40 games after returning from knee and Achilles injuries that sidelined him for the entire 2020 campaign.

The Rockets are shifting to a younger presence in the aftermath of trading former franchise star James Harden to the Brooklyn Nets. The plan is to build around Christian Wood, Jalen Green, Kevin Porter Jr., Jae'Sean Tate, Josh Christopher and Usman Garuba.

Houston acquired Wall in a trade with the Washington Wizards before the beginning of the 2020-21 season. He had spent the first nine seasons of his career in D.C.
