Report: Suns keep coach Monty Williams with long-term extension

The reigning NBA Coach of the Year is staying with the Phoenix Suns for the foreseeable future. According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Monty Williams agreed to a long-term contract extension with the Suns on Saturday.

While the terms of the contract haven't yet been reported, Williams still had two years left on his last deal with the team.

Williams, 50, has been the Suns' head coach since 2019, leading the team to a 149-78 regular season record over three years at the helm. Phoenix won the 2021 Western Conference Finals, but lost in six games to the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2021 NBA Finals.

Last season, the Suns finished with the best regular season record in the NBA and Williams earned Coach of the Year honors. However, the team's season ended with a blowout loss to the Dallas Mavericks in Game 7 of the Western Conference Semifinals.

Williams played for a decade in the NBA with the New York Knicks, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers. He began his coaching career in 2005 as a Portland Trail Blazers assistant and became the head coach of the New Orleans Hornets (eventually renamed the Pelicans) in 2010.

In five seasons with New Orleans, Williams' team compiled a 173-221 record. The team made the playoffs twice, but won just two games over the combined appearances.
