According to NBA insider Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic, the Minnesota Timberwolves and Washington Wizards have discussed a Tyus Jones trade.

The Wizards are believed to be looking for a first-round pick in return for Jones, who began his career with the Timberwolves.

“The Wolves and Wizards have discussed Jones, league sources said,” Krawczynski wrote in his NBA trade rumors column. “Washington is believed to be looking for a first-round pick in return for him. If the rebuilding team sticks to that asking price, the Wolves will not be able to match it unless they can construct some multiteam deals that bring a pick from another team. Minnesota does have a surplus of second-round picks, including a juicy 2024 selection from Memphis, to throw into an offer. With Jones set to be a free agent at the end of this season, it will be interesting to see if the Wizards can get a first-round pick for him.”

Jones is averaging 12.2 points, 2.8 rebounds and 6.3 assists this season while shooting 49.1% from the field, 39.2% from beyond the arc and 75.8% from the free-throw line. He’s making $14 million in the final year of his contract.

A Minnesota native, Jones appeared in 247 games with the Timberwolves from 2015-16 to 2018-19. He averaged 5.1 points, 1.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists.

The Timberwolves are 35-16. They are in third place in the West. Meanwhile, the Wizards are 9-40. They are in 14th place in the East.

Jones, 27, has career averages of 7.2 points, 1.9 rebounds and 4.1 assists with the Timberwolves, Memphis Grizzlies and Wizards. The Duke product is one of the best passers in the NBA and he doesn’t turn the ball over that much.

Along with the Timberwolves, Jones has drawn trade interest from the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks, sources told NBA Analysis Network.
