Report: Two former Kevin Durant teammates emerge as potential Suns targets

The Phoenix Suns have been active since their 2022-23 season drew to a close. The Western Conference franchise recently traded for Bradley Beal. Phoenix has also been floated in trade rumors linking Deandre Ayton with a move away from the franchise, although that seems unlikely at this point.

However, according to Marc Stein, Phoenix holds interest in two former Kevin Durant teammates. Yuta Watanabe and Mike James both spent time with Durant on the Brooklyn Nets. Now, the Suns could extend a veteran minimum offer sheet to one of the former Nets role players as they look to fill out the back end of their roster.

"As Phoenix scours the league for quality players willing to play for the league minimum and chase a ring in its supporting cast surrounding Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, Nets sharpshooter Yuta Watanabe and Nets alumnus Mike James (Durant's close friend who played this past season at AS Monaco in the EuroLeague) have surfaced as potential targets," Stein reported.

Since acquiring Beal, Phoenix has clearly looked to position itself as championship favorites ahead of next season. In looking to add either Watanabe or James, it would appear the front office is keen on keeping Durant happy in his current surroundings. However, the key to keeping Durant happy is winning on the court.

Acquiring players who can help Phoenix compete on a nightly basis should be the front office's main objective. If they believe Watanabe or James can do that, great. Otherwise, adding players to appease one of your stars is a risky move. The Suns have done the hard work by acquiring Beal and creating a new big three. It would be a shame to see them trip up when looking to fill out their bench.

This isn't to say that Wantanabe or James isn't the right fit. Both players are more than capable of filling a role. However, there may be other free agents around the NBA who could provide more impact from the bench. Being Durant's friend shouldn't be the only thing you need on your resume.
