The Houston Rockets, driven by a standout performance from Fred VanVleet, who scored 21 points, emerged victorious against the San Antonio Spurs with a final score of 103-101 during Tuesday’s NBA action.

The Rockets managed to contain the highly touted Victor Wembanyama, limiting him to 13 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists. Houston’s strategic gameplay shone in the final moments as they clung to their lead through critical free-throw shooting after San Antonio narrowed the gap to a single point with 19 seconds left.

“I feel like we followed the game plan until the final minute,” Rockets wing Dillon Brooks explained. “We wanted to foul and not let them get any shots up on the rim, make them earn it on the free throw line.”

This victory extends Houston’s road winning streak to four games, positioning them just five games behind Golden State for the 10th spot in the Western Conference standings.

Wembanyama’s performance was highlighted by a sluggish start, but he managed to complete the game with a respectable stat line despite Houston’s concerted efforts to disrupt his rhythm through aggressive defensive tactics.

“I wish we played him again,” Brooks said, reflecting on the challenge of guarding Wembanyama.

San Antonio’s coach Gregg Popovich praised the tenacity of Tre Jones, who emerged as a critical player for the Spurs, especially in light of Wembanyama and Devin Vassell‘s struggles to find their shooting rhythm.

“Tre is a consummate competitor. He’s going to do everything he can to win a game. Simple as that,” Popovich said. “That’s what he does. He’s at his best night after night after night.”

Despite the Spurs’ efforts, they now face the challenge of finishing the season on a stronger note to avoid matching their worst record in franchise history.

The Rockets showcased a balanced attack, with Jalen Green and Jabari Smith Jr. supporting the scoring effort, highlighting the team’s depth even in the absence of key players like Alperen Sengun.

Houston’s defensive strategy against Wembanyama was a focal point, with coach Ime Udoka emphasizing the importance of physicality and team defense in containing the Spurs’ young star.

As both teams look ahead to their next matchups, the Rockets and Spurs continue to navigate the complexities of the NBA season, with each game presenting new challenges and opportunities for growth.
