The season officially ended for Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday. They closed out their campaign on a bit of a high note by taking down the Detroit Pistons, 123-95, in a bottom-of-the-NBA barrel type of matchup for these two sides.

Wembanyama didn’t even play in San Antonio’s season finale after being ruled out due to right ankle injury management, aka a typical night off. Despite his absence in his team’s final game of the season, however, there’s no denying that Wemby had a sensational first year as a pro.

San Antonio Spurs News: Victor Wembanyama’s Frightening Statement

If you ask the 20-year-old superstar, however, Wembanyama firmly believes that he is still quite a ways away from his final form. In fact, he remains adamant that he hasn’t even scratched the surface just yet.

When asked how far away he is from his peak, the Fench phenom dropped a frightening response:

“I would say that I am currently at 15% of my capacity, between my first NBA game and what I hope will be my prime,” he said, via Theo Quintard of Eurosport.

If this is Wemby at 15%, I cannot even imagine what 100% is going to look like.

Never Settling

To be fair, Wemby did acknowledge that he’s not disappointed with his performance as a rookie. He is far from delighted, though:

“Yes, overall it was in line with my expectations,” he said. “I have never had any doubts about my ability to perform because I am the person who knows myself best. I know the work that has been done so there is no reason to worry.”

This might sound cocky and overconfident from anybody else, but hearing it from Wemby just makes it very believable.

Fans and experts alike will argue that Wembanyama has been nothing short of amazing in his first season. However, the Spurs star actually thinks otherwise:

“Not really. That may be the case but that’s not how I feel. Every day I try to surpass myself, set new records, win more matches. But the next day, I always tell myself that I didn’t do enough, to push myself even more. I would have liked to play all the matches and not miss any but I quite agree with the way we managed the season. For a first, it’s satisfactory.”

You just know that this young man is built different.
