In a somewhat surprising move, the Sixers are planning to George Hill. What could Daryl Morey have up his sleeve?

After trading away four second-round picks for Hill at the trade deadline, the two-way combo guard’s time with the Sixers has come to an unceremonious end. According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Philadelphia 76ers will waive George Hill.

George Hill‘s time with the Sixers can certainly be considered a failure as he spent much of his time injured and clearly was not completely right during the playoffs. It would have been nice to see Hill return to the Sixers after healing for a full offseason, but it’s just not meant to be, apparently.

It’s a disappointing move as many were hoping that George would either compete for the team or be used as salary matching in a trade. By waiving Hill, the Sixers clear about $8.77 million, which is the clear reason for the move, but what remains to be seen is what the team’s next move will be.

The team could opt to bring back veteran Danny Green, or they could hope to qualify for the standard mid-level exception (roughly $9.5 million). If they can land a quality player for that amount, then the move could certainly be worthwhile, but it is disappointing as there was a great opportunity to utilize him as a living trade exception, but the team wouldn’t have made this decision unless there was something else up their sleeve.
