Montrezl Harrell, the 2019-2020 Sixth Man of the Year, has been waived by the Philadelphia 76ers in a move to lower the Sixers’ roster to 15 players ahead of the start of the season. Montrezl Harrell joined Philadelphia last season and appeared in 57 games, starting in seven.
Harrell had signed a one-year contract with a player option with the Sixers in 2022. He declined that player option in the past offseason and ended up resigning with the team for the league minimum. Unfortunately, Trez then tore his ACL and meniscus in an offseason workout. His salary is still guaranteed for this season.
Montrezl Harrell wasn’t the same player he was in 2019-2020 for the Philadelphia 76ers, but was still an important part of the locker room and proved his ability to step up throughout the season. Harrell appeared in 57 games for the Sixers, starting in 7 of them. He averaged 5.6 points per game on 58.9% shooting from the field. He also tallied 2.8 rebounds per game.
With the emergence of Paul Reed last season, Harrell was not able to make the impact that he likely wanted to. However, he was always ready and was called on to play significant minutes over a three-game stretch without Joel Embiid, dropping his season-high 20 points on the Detroit Pistons on January 8th, 2023.
While Harrell was not the Sixth Man of the Year candidate that people were hoping for, he was an important part of the locker room for Philadelphia. Hopefully, the former award winner can make a comeback soon and recapture his past form. According to Shams, Montrezl Harrell is looking to come back from his injury by the All-Star break. The Sixers plan to stick with Harrell through his recovery and through his rehab.
