Spencer Dinwiddie scouted a potential new team from the stands
Thursday morning, Brooklyn traded Spencer Dinwiddie to Toronto, who waived him. Thursday night, he was in the stands at Madison Square Garden, checking out what could be his next team.
Dinwiddie sat behind the Dallas Mavericks' bench and watched them defeat the shorthanded New York Knicks. The point guard spent roughly a year with Dallas between the 2022 trade deadline, when he came over from Washington, to the 2023 deadline when the Mavericks traded him to Brooklyn for Kyrie Irving.
The team made the conference finals in his first season in Dallas. Dinwiddie was a good fit with Luka Doncic, averaging 17.1 points and 4.9 assists while making over 40 percent of his three-pointers. He also has experience playing with Irving for two seasons in Brooklyn.
While Dinwiddie attending the game might not mean anything in itself, Dallas coach Jason Kidd may have confirmed the Mavericks would add another player after trading for P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford Thursday.
"Maybe three new pieces" may have been a slip of the tongue. Or it could mean Kidd knows that the Mavericks' new backup point guard was sitting two rows back, and he can't say anything until the deal is official.
